When Anette von Droste-Hülshoff wrote her famous ballad of the “Boy in the Moor”, much of Westphalia was indeed inaccessible, covered in fens and bogs, just right for the imagination of a romantic poetess. Today only a few little islets of carefully tended wilderness remain, such as this one near my hometown.
